Empowering Young Learners Through the Read to Succeed Initiative
Johnson County Schools is leading the way in early literacy education with its Read to Succeed Initiative, a program made possible by the Read to Succeed Act and SEEK funding. This initiative ensures that every K-4 student builds the foundational literacy skills needed for academic and lifelong success.

A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO LITERACY

At the heart of the Read to Succeed Initiative are the district’s dedicated Read to Succeed Facilitators, who are instrumental in advancing literacy outcomes. Their efforts include:


  • Developing and implementing district-wide Read to Succeed Literacy Plans.
  • Creating Read-at-Home Plans to engage families in supporting student success.
  • Delivering targeted interventions for K-4 students who are below proficiency levels.
  • Facilitating daily Magnetic Reading Groups, which provide systematic, explicit instruction tailored to individual student needs.

Personalized Instruction for Every Student

Students thrive with 45 minutes of daily small-group reading instruction, personalized to meet their unique learning needs. This is complemented by Wonders instruction, which further strengthens foundational literacy skills. These efforts are designed to ensure that every student, regardless of their starting point, has the tools to succeed academically.

Supporting Educators for Lasting Impact

Johnson County’s educators receive robust support through high-quality coaching from Curriculum Associates, which empowers them to implement High-Quality Instructional Resources (HQIR) like Magnetic Reading effectively.

This coaching ensures that educators have the tools and strategies needed to sustain impactful literacy instruction.

Collaboration Drives Success

The Read to Succeed Initiative thrives on teamwork. Administrators, teachers, instructional assistants, Digital Learning Instructional Coaches, and SEL Specialists collaborate to:

Engage in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to enhance teaching practices.

Conduct unit and lesson internalizations to maintain cohesive instruction.

Leverage strategies like Kagan structures to boost student engagement and participation.
