Do you and your staff understand how to comply with student records confidentiality and the Kentucky Open Records Act?
Do you need to understand how to interact with the public and the media to put your district in an attractive light?

Breaches of student record confidentiality can harm students and may result in civil liability damages against the school district and individuals. Also, because the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is federal law, the U.S. Department of Education can withhold federal funding for failure to comply with FERPA mandates.

To avoid monetary penalties and bad publicity from the State Attorney General’s Office, district administrators must understand which records must be provided to the public upon request. Administrators must also understand the nature of records protected from public release under other laws. Many requests received by school districts may combine a request for open records with a request for student records. It is crucial that administrators learn how to legally respond.

Appropriate communication with the public and the media can influence how your school board, administrators, and staff are perceived by the voting public. Understanding how to place your district in the best public light can be critical to gaining public support for district initiatives.

Clarion Hotel, 1950 Newtown Pike, Lexington, KY 40511, 859-233-0512
The Clarion has opened a room block for this conference at the rate of $89 until September 1, 2011.
